ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Carol Beuchat was in the middle of a career in academic science when, in 2001 while in South Africa studying sunbirds, she picked up her camera with an interest in doing a bit of wildlife photography.  She started photographing dogs for practice, and before long a second career was born.  Today, she is an award-winning photographer much in demand for her breathtaking portraits of dogs.  Among her canine clientele are some of the top show dogs in America (watch for them at Westminster!), as well as beloved family pets, and her corporate clients include the American Kennel Club, NestlĂ© Purina, and Eukanuba.

Her photographs illustrate many books, including Best In Show: The World of Show Dogs and Dog Shows, The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel In Fact and Fancy, Barron's Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds, 2nd Ed, French Bulldogs (Barron's), Comprehensive Owner's Guide: The Ibizan Hound (Kennel Club), and The Complete Dog Owner's Manual (Struik SA).  Her images have appeared in trade magazines (People, Dog World, Dog Fancy) as well as purebred and specialist show dog magazines including AKC Gazette, Dogs in Review, Dog News, Canine Chronicle, Showsight Magazine, The Royal Spaniels, Top Notch Toys, Working Dog Digest, Terrier Type, and many others. Her work also illustrates foreign periodicals including Dog World (UK), All About Dogs in South Africa, Southern Africa's Dog Directory, and Animal Talk Magazine (South Africa).

She has won the American Kennel Club's annual AKC Gazette Photo Contest three times (2004, 2005, and 2009), and she was a featured artist in "Canine Artists Extraordinaire" (Dogs in Review) and "The Best Dog Photographers: Inspirational Moments" (Today's Breeder - Purina).  She is a member of the World Dog Press Association (WDPA) and the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP).  Her work was featured in a 2007 exhibit, Canine Treasures, at the AKC Museum of the Dog and is currently displayed at The Dogs Gallery in Westlake Village, CA.

Carol is a graduate of Occidental College (A.B. Biology, 1976; M.A. Biology 1977) and Cornell University (Ph.D. Physiology, 1982) and has held faculty and research positions at Colgate University, University of Arizona, San Diego State University, and University of Cape Town.  She currently resides in Southern California with her English Springer Spaniel, Sally.
